‘Tooning for Tots Volume 15: On the Wing

By September 28, 2014'Tooning for Tots

Winged creatures big and small fill the ranks of this week’s volume of ‘Tooning for Tots. We’ve got mythical creatures, insects, famous cartoon characters, and superheroes. Our weekly colored image is the sketch of Tinkerbell from Disney, resting on a rock ledge by the side of the ocean.

Once again, the children picked an eclectic mix of characters and creatures for me to draw. There are plenty of comic characters in this week’s set, including Batman, Ironman, Captain America, and Supergirl. We’ve got a bunch of insects, like dragonflies, bees, ants, and butterflies. A mythic griffin by its nest joins the cast, as do a skeleton family getting ready for the work day — or night. Rounding out the lot is a drawing of 80’s cartoon staple the Transformers, featuring Dinobot Grimlock and Decepticon combiner Devastator. This sketch was a special request from my girlfriend’s son. While not the most technically accurate drawing, I’m sure he’ll be pleased with it. Grimlock is his favorite Transformer.

While the Tinkerbell picture was strong enough to be the colored image of the week, there are other successful sketches. I’m pleased with the insect drawings, and I know the Transformer one will be a hit. I tried to add little extras and fun easter eggs in this batch — probably because I had so many figures to draw. Figure drawing is not my strength. So while Supergirl will please the child her requested her, the added joke of the bird falling in love with her will push it over the edge.
